Barkingmad works with a network of animal rescues across the country, and we are witnessing the devastating effects of pet overpopulation firsthand. Every day, countless animals lose their lives because there simply aren’t enough loving homes to go around. Shelters are filled beyond capacity, and the idea of a pet being treated as nothing more than an item on a store shelf is heartbreaking and irresponsible.
It has come to our attention through local videos and media articles that local retailer SPAR has decided to open pet shops that sell live animals in their pet storey stores. Their pilot store (pet masters) shows puppies being sold. This reckless decision will only exacerbate an already dire situation. Unlike responsible retailers who’ve wisely moved away from selling live animals, SPAR risks aggravating the problem by not conducting home checks, not visiting breeders, and readily supplying animals to virtually anyone who walks through their doors.
Globally, many responsible retailers have recognized the negative impact of selling live animals and have shifted away from this practice. They understand the importance of acting ethically and the role they play in promoting animal welfare. By continuing to sell live animals, SPAR are not only being irresponsible but setting themselves apart negatively from other brands who choose to act with compassion and restraint.
We demand that SPAR reconsider its decision and stop the sale of live animals in its PET STOREY stores immediately. Instead, SPAR should focus on supporting local animal shelters and rescues, promoting adoption, and perhaps dedicating space within their stores to facilitate educational programs about responsible pet ownership.
By doing so, SPAR can become a positive influence in the community, helping to alleviate the burden on overcrowded shelters and making a real difference in the lives of animals and prospective pet owners alike.
